The CLOUD evolution: from Windows Azure to Microsoft Azure

Learn how Microsoft's cloud has evolved and enter the world of digital transformation with AZURE

In 2008, Microsoft introduced Windows Azure, thus entering a market that has evolved exponentially and promises to continue to surprise. To begin to explain what cloud computing is, let's give a definition of this service. It is a paradigm that offers services over a network. Focusing on Microsoft, Windows Azure is born as a cloud layer that runs on systems that use Windows Server.

Cloud computing provides solutions that give agility to transform the business as customers and market needs change. It is a very elastic platform that also provides tools to work with it.

Over the years it has been incorporating improvements and in 2010 Microsoft Azure is presented. The possibilities it offers are on the rise. They represent a new space for companies to develop their software while saving the costs associated with hardware maintenance. And is that in Microsoft Azure payment is made per use.

The cloud also offers security guarantees far superior to those of the company's own servers. As well as the realization of continuous backups that ensure the recovery of data in the event of any unforeseen event.

AZURE SERVICES CLASSIFICATION

Azure

Azure as PaaS

Windows Azure is born as PaaS. That is, as a platform as a service. This area is responsible for managing servers and hosting, for example, websites (up to 10 shared machines).

It is also the part where the software is deployed.

Azure as IaaS

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) allows you to create virtual machines with the operating system of your choice. On the other hand, it is also possible to choose the number of processing cores, RAM size and import virtual disks.

In addition, complex scripting can be performed with PowerShell tools.

Azure as SaaS

Software as a service is the most well-known part of Azure. This is where you find, for example, Office 365 or Microsoft Dynamics 365.

Cloud Services

Cloud services are also classified into three other categories depending on the type of cloud we are dealing with:

  • Private cloud or dedicated environment access is exclusive to a company that has deployed its infrastructure.
  • In the public cloud or shared environment, the company shares the infrastructure in which its systems are hosted with other entities.
  • Hybrid cloud, which is a combination of the two previous ones, i.e., private cloud service with public cloud uses as well.
